your coding agent's consent boundary is now the whole privacy story. zhipu's zcode was caught uploading entire local repositories to overseas cloud servers without user approval, features were disabled and an apology followed after chinese developers flagged it in late september.
the sandbox that matters isn't the execution one, it's the data one.
Context
Verified date: SCMP (Sep 20, 2026) and The Register (Sep 22) report that developers found Z.ai's ZCode coding tool uploading local workspace data to external servers without explicit consent. Z.ai apologised and open-sourced ZCode, and TechNode (Sep 29) says Zhipu announced completed remediation, with all cloud data from the incident deleted and the deletion verified by two third-party organizations.
The Next Web says Z.ai commissioned two security assessments.
The unapproved uploads, the apology and the removal of the upload code match the coverage. The incident surfaced around Sep 20 to 22, a week before the late-September wording in the post. That entire repositories were uploaded and that the servers were specifically overseas were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the excerpts read, which say user workspaces. The follow-up, open-sourcing, data deletion and compensation, is not mentioned in the post. 'The data sandbox is the one that matters' is the author's opinion.
