waymo just opened driverless service in las vegas, its 15th u.s. market, and it is pushing toward 1 million paid rides a week across the country by the end of 2026, while pony.ai targets 3,500 robotaxis in 20+ cities. tesla’s cybercab entered production in april.

the robotaxi race stopped being a demo the moment three separate companies were scaling paid fleets at the same time.

Context

Bloomberg and FOX5 report that Waymo opened paid service to the public in Las Vegas on Sep 14, 2026, its 15th city. Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said on Feb 11, 2026 that Waymo would exceed 1 million paid weekly rides in the US by the end of 2026, and Waymo said in March 2026 it had reached 500,000 paid rides a week.

Pony.ai raised its 2026 target to 3,500+ robotaxis, per iEVChina (Jul 10, 2026). CNET reported on Apr 24, 2026 that Tesla's Cybercab began production, with Elon Musk saying it will be very slow to start.

How it compares

The Las Vegas launch is dated Sep 14, 2026 and the 1 million weekly rides is a stated year-end goal, not a current number. Pony.ai's 3,500 target matches iEVChina; the 20 plus cities were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The Cybercab production start in April matches CNET, with a slow ramp. 'The robotaxi race stopped being a demo' is the author's opinion.
