Three governments are pushing ai agents into the public sector in 2026

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

three governments are pushing ai agents into the public sector in 2026: the uae plans to convert 50% of its federal services to agentic models within two years, singapore is registering agents for 150,000 public officers, and estonia wants digital ids for agents. none of them has published the rule that decides which decisions an agent is allowed to make on its own.

agentic government is shipping faster than its own accountability.

Context

The UAE Cabinet (Apr 23, 2026) announced a framework to deploy agentic AI across 50 percent of government sectors and operations within two years. The Straits Times (Jun 2, 2026) reports Singapore is developing a registry of AI agents for 150,000 public officers.

Estonia's Prime Minister said on Jun 17, 2026 that Estonia will move to create digital identities for AI agents, after the Eesti.ai advisory board meeting; the Estonian Information System Authority runs the Reason Reserve project on rules for safe autonomous agents.

How it compares

All three plans match the sources: the UAE's 50 percent in two years, Singapore's registry for 150,000 officers and Estonia's agent identities. The Singapore item is a registry under development, and the UAE one is a framework with a two-year target. The claim that none has published a rule for which decisions agents may make alone was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. Estonia's Reason Reserve project is explicitly about the rules and technical foundations for autonomous agents. 'Shipping faster than accountability' is the author's.
