The whale is now being asked to file its own travel notice

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the whale is now being asked to file its own travel notice: an earthquake seismometer learns to hear bryde's whale calls with 99 percent accuracy from 1.7 million labeled seismic samples, thermal cameras with ai spot gray whale blows four nautical miles out and alert ships, and a satellite system hunts right whales from orbit.

the leviathan now files its own position report.

Context

UC Santa Barbara’s May 21, 2026 account describes thermal cameras and WhaleSpotter AI detecting gray-whale blows at up to four nautical miles. A credentialed marine-mammal specialist reviews every detection before an alert; detections are shared through Whale Safe and the Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Service.

NOAA’s GAIA right-whale program tasks very-high-resolution satellite imagery with USGS to build expert-labelled training data. Its Cape Cod Bay work compares satellite observations with aerial surveys. This is a detection research effort, not a verified continuous real-time whale-position feed.

How it compares

Thermal blows locate surfacing animals when conditions permit; human verification remains part of the alert workflow. Satellite scenes cannot continuously track submerged whales. The note’s seismic sample count and accuracy were located in secondary news and abstract records, but the primary paper’s split and validation methods were not verified here: unsupported by a primary reading, not refuted. Binary call classification, animal counts and precise location are different outputs.

Watch next

  • The primary island-seismometer paper and independent field validation. Thermal false-alert and missed-whale rates by range and weather. Prospective GAIA detection tests with matched aerial surveys.
