The wetland is now being asked to keep its own census

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the wetland is now being asked to keep its own census: a global model called swamp eye watches wetland change from orbit, a phenology guided network classifies china’s coastal marsh vegetation at 10 meters, and the yellow river delta counts birds by facial recognition with accuracy past 90 percent.

the marsh now files its own species list.

Context

The Scientific Reports paper presents Swamp-AI, a deep learning model for monitoring wetland change across the globe, and releases the Global Swamp Annotated Database, annotated wetland data from Sentinel-2 imagery of 2019 that uses a single wetland class. The authors say it is limited to that one class but performs well in many locations, and recommend it as a first step for guiding where detailed investigation and ground validation should go.

The CCAV-10m paper presents the first publicly available annual species-level wetland dataset for eastern coastal China at 10 m resolution for 2016 to 2023, produced with a phenology-guided coastal wetland vegetation classification network that integrates Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. Xinhua reports that the Yellow River Delta reserve has over 300 video monitoring points, 18 with AI recognition, and that identification accuracy for certain flagship and large bird species now exceeds 90 percent.

How it compares

The note joins three separate projects. The post calls the global model 'swamp eye'. The paper's name is Swamp-AI, so the name in the note is a variant. The post says it watches change from orbit, and the paper's database is a single 2019 snapshot with a single wetland class, so the change monitoring rests on applying the model to different years, which the pages read describe as the model's purpose.

The 90 percent is Xinhua's statement for certain flagship and large bird species, not all birds. The post says counts birds by facial recognition with accuracy past 90 percent, which drops that limit. The bird recognition network is a reserve platform and not part of the other two studies.

'The marsh now files its own species list' is the author's line. The CCAV-10m dataset is vegetation species mapping, while the bird platform is bird identification, and neither is a census by the wetland.
