The well is now being interpreted

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the well is now being interpreted: totalenergies and mistral started a 115 million dollar program to build ai models for reservoir exploration, mckinsey sizes the ai opportunity in oil and gas at 230 billion, and china’s cnpc already runs its kunlun llm across the whole chain.

the driller now consults the model before the seismic crew.

Context

TotalEnergies and Mistral announced on Sep 15, 2026 a three-year joint program of more than 100 million euros, about 115 million dollars per World Oil, to build frontier AI models for exploration and reservoir engineering. Bloomberg and Energy Digital carried it the same day.

The aim is a new generation of models for subsurface work.

How it compares

The program size, term and focus match the sources. McKinsey's 230 billion dollar estimate and CNPC's Kunlun model across the chain were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
