The tedious part of film is becoming a batch job
the tedious part of film is becoming a batch job: ai rotoscoping that took weeks now finishes in days, dialogue cleanup tools remove 60 to 80 percent of editing work, and color grading time is down up to 75 percent. ai sits in the daily workflow of every major vfx house from ilm to weta.
the crew that used to paint frames by hand is becoming the team that reviews what the model did.
Context
WorldMetrics' 2026 VFX report says ILM uses AI to remove unwanted elements from footage, cutting post-production cleanup time by 50 percent, and Framestore reports AI automates 70 percent of color grading adjustment. Foundry released SmartRoto, an AI plugin for Nuke, on Jul 16, 2026.
Deadline reported on Oct 10, 2026 on Weta FX's view of AI strengths and limitations.
Rotoscoping and color grading being sped up by AI matches the sources, but the figures differ: 50 percent cleanup reduction at ILM and 70 percent of grading adjustment at Framestore, against 60 to 80 percent of dialogue cleanup and up to 75 percent faster grading in the post. Rotoscoping going from weeks to days, and AI in the daily workflow of every major house, were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
