The taxi driver is now an algorithm with a fleet
the taxi driver is now an algorithm with a fleet: waymo crossed 1 million paid rides a week in april, twenty times its early-2024 volume, and passed 20 million driverless trips across 15 metros with a 3,000-car fleet. tesla runs 25 unsupervised cars in texas.
the gap between scale and demo has never been wider.
Context
Waymo's co-CEO said in March 2026 that Waymo had about 3,000 cars completing roughly half a million rides a week, with a target of one million paid rides per week by the end of the year (reported Mar 24, 2026). The Driverless Digest (May 14, 2026) says Waymo had completed over 20 million trips with a fleet of roughly 3,000 robotaxis in 11 US cities.
Electrek (Apr 30, 2026) says Tesla's unsupervised Robotaxi fleet had grown to 25 cumulative vehicles across three Texas cities. Electrek (Jul 8, 2026) says Waymo's fleet was roughly 3,500 and it was still pushing toward the 1 million weekly rides target.
The 20 million trips, the roughly 3,000 cars and Tesla's 25 unsupervised cars match the sources. 'Crossed 1 million paid rides a week in April' conflicts with them: the sources read give about 500,000 weekly rides in March and 1 million as a year-end target. The 15 metros figure also differs from the 11 cities in the May report. 'Twenty times its early-2024 volume' was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
