The swell is now being asked to file its own forecast

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the swell is now being asked to file its own forecast: a hybrid model predicts significant wave height up to 10 days ahead in 3 hour steps, a residual u net corrects global ww3 fields and was validated against a ship’s real fuel logs, and ecmwf’s aifs now carries wave state in its learned atmosphere.

the sea now files its own height.

Context

A paper titled Improving Long-Range Significant Wave Height Forecasts for Maritime Energy Efficiency: A Residual U-Net Approach Validated with Real-Ship Fuel Consumption Data (2026) corrects wave forecasts with a residual U-Net and checks them against a ship's fuel data. ECMWF has published a blog on representing ocean wind waves in its AIFS, and an arXiv paper on the surface ocean in AIFS.

Hybrid deep learning models for significant wave height forecasting are also published for the Bay of Bengal and China's coast.

How it compares

The residual U-Net with real-ship fuel validation and wave state in AIFS match the sources. The '10 days in 3 hour steps' hybrid and the explicit WW3 correction detail were not seen in the excerpts read, so they are unsupported here, not refuted.

'The sea now files its own height' is the author's opinion.
