The surgeon is now an operator at the other end of a link
the surgeon is now an operator at the other end of a link: a urologist in wuhan remotely performed surgery on a patient 3,000 kilometers away in hyderabad, and uc san diego ran the first live surgery with teleoperated humanoid robots. autonomous ai-trained robots have done cholecystectomies without direct human control.
the operating room stopped being a room.
Context
Verified event dates: The Hindu reported on May 25, 2026 that Dr Syed Mohammed Ghouse at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan performed robotic surgery on a patient in Hyderabad, over 3,000 km away. UC San Diego said on Jul 8, 2026 that two teleoperated humanoid robots performed live surgery for the first time.
Ars Technica (Jul 9, 2026) says the humanoid operation removed gallbladders from living pigs, controlled by surgeons rather than autonomous. Johns Hopkins reported on Jul 9, 2025 that a robot trained on surgery videos performed a lengthy phase of a gallbladder removal without human help.
The Wuhan to Hyderabad operation and the UCSD humanoid surgery match their sources. UCSD's surgery was on live pigs. The autonomous work read covers one phase of a gallbladder removal, not a full cholecystectomy, so 'have done cholecystectomies without direct human control' goes beyond what was seen.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
