The sun is now being asked for its schedule

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the sun is now being asked for its schedule: nasa’s coffies model predicts storm-causing active regions up to 12 hours before they emerge, a multi-task network forecasts flares and coronal mass ejections together, and sheffield models reading 30 years of helioseismic data put solar cycle 25’s minimum around 2030 to 2031.

the star now issues its own weather alerts.

Context

NASA said on Aug 14 that its COFFIES team developed a sliding-window Transformer to forecast solar active regions, and an NJIT-led team reports an AI system that spots faint warning signals of active regions hours before they emerge. A Sheffield team ran 30 years of GONG helioseismic data through three machine learning models and all three predict Solar Cycle 25 bottoming out (Startgaze, May 21).

Separate papers cover multi-task deep learning for solar energetic particles and flare to CME associations.

How it compares

COFFIES active region forecasting, the Sheffield helioseismic forecast and multi-task solar models match the sources. The '12 hours' lead time and the 'around 2030 to 2031' minimum were not seen as exact figures in the excerpts read, so they are unsupported here, not refuted. NJIT says 'hours' before emergence.

'The star now issues its own weather alerts' is the author's opinion.
