The storm of dust is now being asked to announce itself
the storm of dust is now being asked to announce itself: the first ai aerosol weather model forecasts the whole planet five days out in one minute, a graph attention network reproduces traditional dust forecasts with correlations above 0.99, and a diffusion model nowcasts west african dust and convective storms from satellite imagery.
the sky now files its own dust report.
Context
A Nature paper describes a machine-learning-driven Global Aerosol-Meteorology Forecasting System, AI-GAMFS, that provides 5-day, 3-hourly forecasts, and a WMO news item dated March 6, 2026 calls it the world's first AI-driven global aerosol-meteorology forecasting system.
The AI-DUST paper describes a Multiple Stacked Graph Attention Network with physical constraints, driven by AI-generated weather forecasts, that reproduces a traditional dust model with correlations above 0.99 for one step and above 0.61 at longer lead times. A Weather and Climate Extremes paper uses diffusion-model predictions of SEVIRI RGB imagery to nowcast dust and convective storms.
The 5-day global forecast matches the Nature paper, and 'first' is the WMO headline's claim for the system. The 'in one minute' runtime was not found in the pages read, so it is unsupported here, not refuted.
The 0.99 correlation is for one-step prediction when reproducing a traditional dust model. The paper reports lower correlations at longer lead times (above 0.61), so 'correlations above 0.99' holds for the short step only, and it measures agreement with a model, not with observations.
The note joins three separate studies, and the West African nowcasting work is a different group using satellite imagery. 'The sky now files its own dust report' is the author's line.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.
