The soil is now being asked to report its wetness

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the soil is now being asked to report its wetness: a knowledge guided ai sharpens satellite moisture from about 25 kilometers down to 5, an ensemble downsizes smap’s central valley readings from 9 kilometers to 30 meters, and a european framework hits 10 meter resolution with sentinel 1 and 2.

the ground now files its own dryness.

Context

A 2025 paper, Soil moisture downscaling using machine learning with scale-aware, physically informed feature constraints, downscales coarse satellite soil moisture with physics-informed constraints. A separate paper in Environmental Modelling and Software uses ensemble deep learning to map soil moisture in California's Central Valley at higher resolution from NASA's SMAP satellite.

Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 are used together for soil moisture mapping in published work, and Copernicus publishes a daily 1 km European surface soil moisture product.

How it compares

The three items come from separate studies: knowledge-guided downscaling, a Central Valley ensemble and Sentinel-1 and 2 based mapping. The Central Valley paper matches the SMAP downscaling description.

'25 km to 5 km', '9 km to 30 m' and 'a European framework at 10 m' were not seen as exact figures in the excerpts read, so they are unsupported here, not refuted. A Sentinel-1/2 paper in the results gives 100 m.

'The ground now files its own dryness' is the author's opinion.
