The soil is now being asked to keep its own carbon account

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the soil is now being asked to keep its own carbon account: a field probe scans soil chemistry in under 20 seconds with ai powered spectroscopy, a generative model rebuilds bare soil reflectance from vegetated satellite pixels to estimate carbon under mixed cover, and machine learning maps organic carbon across northern peru's coast.

the dirt now files its own sequestration ledger.

Context

ChrysaLabs’ technology page describes proximal sensors, spectroscopy and machine-learning soil models. Its heading claims scans in under 20 seconds, while the accompanying text says under 30 seconds. These are vendor timing claims with an unresolved internal difference.

ReflectGAN reconstructs bare-soil reflectance from vegetated satellite observations using a paired generative model. The preprint combines LUCAS 2018 samples with Landsat 8 imagery; its best Random Forest result reports R-squared of 0.54 with reconstructed inputs.

The March 26, 2026 Motupe River Basin study in northern Peru compares four learning models and ensembles using spatial-block cross-validation and bootstrapped uncertainty. XGBoost has reported R-squared of 0.83, versus 0.70 for the weighted ensemble and 0.63 for Random Forest.

How it compares

A fast scan is not proof of laboratory-equivalent accuracy for every soil property. ChrysaLabs’ 20-versus-30-second wording remains unresolved. ReflectGAN infers a bare-soil signal rather than observing unobstructed soil directly. The Peru study maps carbon content, not verified sequestration over time; concentration maps alone do not establish a carbon-credit ledger.

Watch next

  • Independent probe accuracy and timing across moisture and soil types. ReflectGAN tests outside its training landscape. Repeated field measurements, bulk density and uncertainty before estimating carbon-stock change.
