The snowpack is now being asked to count its water

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the snowpack is now being asked to count its water: a physics guided lstm augments community land model snow simulations to estimate daily swe across the whole northern hemisphere, a density model trained on 2 million readings from 691 snotel stations converts depth to water, and ecmwf added snow fields to aifs v2.

the snow now files its own melt.

Context

A Water Resources Research paper, Observation-Constrained Physical Snow Water Equivalent Simulations Using a Physics-Guided Machine Learning Approach (2026), builds a hybrid physics-guided approach to estimating daily snow water equivalent. A related dataset paper creates a high-resolution Northern Hemisphere daily SWE record for 1980 to 2020 with machine learning.

A 2026 paper in Artificial Intelligence for the Earth Systems estimates snow density and SWE from snow depth, and ECMWF has published a note on integrating snow fields into AIFS v2.

How it compares

The physics-guided hybrid, the Northern Hemisphere daily SWE and ECMWF's snow fields in AIFS v2 match the pages read.

'Community Land Model', '2 million readings from 691 SNOTEL stations' were not seen in the excerpts read, so they are unsupported here, not refuted. The items are separate studies.

'The snow now files its own melt' is the author's opinion.
