The salmon is now being asked to keep its own river ledger
the salmon is now being asked to keep its own river ledger: video models count fish at weirs with over 95 percent accuracy and sort species at 90 to 95, an underwater ai in norway tells native atlantic salmon from invasive pink salmon at 99 percent plus while manual sorting hurts or kills 30 percent, and river cameras now identify count and measure fish in real time.
the run now files its own migration count.
Context
Wild Salmon Center’s October 18, 2023 Salmon Vision account describes more than 500,000 annotated frames from two Indigenous-run British Columbia weirs. Early assessments report accuracy above 90% for coho and 80% for sockeye, with tracking across 12 species. The note’s blanket greater-than-95% counting and 90-to-95% species figures were not established by this source.
Huawei reports identification above 99% in Norwegian pink-salmon sorting pilots and a 30% average injury-or-death rate for earlier manual removal. These are vendor claims, not independently audited figures. A distinct FISHBIO/Simsonar AquaSort project reports species identification above 99%, trapping efficiency above 97%, and a 94% reduction in handling native fish.
Identification accuracy, trapping efficiency, count accuracy and fish welfare are separate outcomes. The Huawei 30% claim concerns injury or death, not mortality alone, and must not be generalized to all manual sorting. AquaSort is a separate system and its project account does not validate Huawei’s figures. The exact general weir percentages and a system measuring fish length in real time remain unsupported in the sources read, not refuted.
