The reef is now being asked to report its own stress
the reef is now being asked to report its own stress: a lightweight cnn called fibonacci net sorts bleached from healthy coral at 97.6 percent accuracy on 7,384 images, cornell fuses satellite heat readings with underwater sensors to predict bleaching before it starts, and noaa watches four months out.
the reef now files its own heat record.
Context
The F-Net paper (IEEE JSTARS, 2026, listed on exa.ai) proposes Fibonacci-Net, a lightweight and interpretable CNN for bleached versus healthy coral classification. The abstract says it is evaluated on 7,384 coral images, reaches 97.6% accuracy, and is meant for resource-constrained edge devices, with a particle swarm optimization and Adam hybrid optimizer for small, imbalanced datasets.
NOAA Coral Reef Watch publishes a four-month coral bleaching heat stress outlook that it updates weekly. Oceanwish reported on May 19, 2026 that Cornell scientists built a machine learning model combining satellite temperature readings with underwater sensor data to estimate heat stress at different reef depths.
The 97.6% and the 7,384 images match the F-Net abstract. The abstract reports accuracy on one image set, and its claim is that F-Net does better than some CNN models in the literature. It does not say how it performs on reefs outside that set.
The Cornell claim comes from Oceanwish, a secondary website, and its date and the model's details were not confirmed against a Cornell or journal source here, so the Cornell result is unsupported here, not refuted. The note's 'predict bleaching before it starts' fits that article's headline and not a published lead time.
The note's 'noaa watches four months out' matches NOAA's four-month outlook page. The three items are separate efforts: a classifier of bleaching in images, a heat stress model and a NOAA satellite-based outlook.
