the quietest giant in ai is a protocol. the mcp registry passed 10,000 servers on sept 1, up from 2,000 in january, and the 2026-07-28 spec made the core stateless — no more sticky sessions.
the plumbing is consolidating faster than the models.
Context
Verified date: the MCP project published the 2026-07-28 specification on Jul 28, 2026. Its blog says it brings a stateless protocol core, Multi Round-Trip Requests, header-based routing, cacheable list results, authorization hardening and a formal extensions framework. AWS's Sep 1 architecture post says the initialize handshake and the Mcp-Session-Id header are gone.
Daily AI World (Sep 2) reports the MCP registry passed 10,000 servers in September 2026, up from 2,000 in January.
The stateless core of the 2026-07-28 spec and the removal of session handling match the MCP blog and AWS. The 10,000 servers and 2,000 in January match Daily AI World; the exact day of Sept 1 was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. One readiness probe disagrees on size: RoninForge counted 31,538 servers in the official registry on Sep 13 and found 31 of the 11,929 reachable ones fully ready for the new spec, so the registry's count depends on what is counted. 'The quietest giant is a protocol' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
