The penguin colony is now being asked to take its own census
the penguin colony is now being asked to take its own census: a weakly supervised model segments adelie colonies in high resolution satellite images from a dataset of 2,044 georeferenced scenes across 193 antarctic colonies, chilean ai reads chinstrap camera trap photos in hours that took weeks by hand, and x band radar coherence with ai maps the largest colony on zavodovski island through the clouds.
the rookery now files its own headcount.
Context
Weakly Labeling the Antarctic (CVPR workshop, 2019) uses 2,044 georeferenced cropped images from 193 Adelie colonies. Its classification network filters unsuitable weak labels, and its segmentation network maps guano areas. Adding curated weak labels raises reported mean intersection-over-union from 42.3% to 60.0%.
INACH’s April 2026 account describes adapted camera-trap AI that distinguishes adult chinstrap penguins from chicks. The project team says processing can take a couple of hours rather than weeks of manual analysis. This is the institute’s account, not an independent timing benchmark.
An EGU 2024 conference abstract proposes AI classification of X-band dual-polarimetric radar coherence for Zavodovski colony mapping. It uses TerraSAR-X and PAZ data plus field campaigns from February and December 2023.
Guano-area segmentation is not an individual-bird census. The 2019 study’s weak supervision still includes hand-labelled data and a small 13-image test set. INACH counts visible birds in camera fields of view, while radar studies colony extent and phenology. The EGU abstract documents a research approach without publishing a quantitative counting-accuracy result; it should not be treated as a validated all-weather headcount.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.
