The peatland is now being asked to keep its own carbon ledger

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the peatland is now being asked to keep its own carbon ledger: machine learning on satellite radar and water table reads carbon stocks within 8 to 15 percent error at landscape scale, sentinel models tell intact peat swamp from drained plantations and flag fire prone hotspots, and a european project sends ai and robots into forested peat for carbon and biodiversity baselines.

the mire now files its own storage report.

Context

The November 26, 2025 tropical-peat radar paper validates L-band InSAR subsidence against high-rate ground measurements in Central Kalimantan. Reported long-term motion accuracy reaches 0.6 mm per year, equivalent to 0.97 tonnes CO2 per hectare per year under its emissions conversion. This is subsidence-based emission estimation, not a direct carbon-stock inventory.

The April 15, 2025 Indonesian fire study uses VIIRS hotspots to analyze drainage, land cover and climate across Sumatra and Kalimantan. Drained peatlands have up to 13 times higher annual mean hotspot density than areas without canals, with relationships varying by land cover and ENSO conditions.

The European Commission’s ForPeat project record plans forested-peatland restoration demonstrations, carbon and biodiversity baselines, and AI/robotics in remote sensing and field collection. These are project objectives, not a report of completed robot deployment.

How it compares

The note’s 8-to-15% landscape carbon-stock error and exact Sentinel intact-versus-plantation model remain unsupported in the primary sources read, not refuted. Related radar-emissions and VIIRS fire studies do not validate those exact claims. Carbon stock, annual emissions and hotspot occurrence are different outcomes. Drainage-fire association is not a universal prospective fire forecast, and ForPeat’s intended baseline work is not achieved carbon-credit certification.
