The officiating crew is shrinking

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the officiating crew is shrinking: the atp tour removed human line judges at most tournaments, and the 2026 world cup runs offside, coaching and security analytics on fifa’s football language model, handing all 48 squads 2,000+ metrics within hours of each whistle. the ai sports analytics market sits at $3.8 billion.

the referee’s call is now a model output.

Context

The ATP announced on Apr 28, 2023 that it would adopt Electronic Line Calling Live across all its events from 2025, replacing on-court line judges (ATP Tour, Reuters and BBC Sport, Apr 28, 2023).

Lenovo says FIFA AI Pro, co-developed with FIFA, is used by all 48 teams at the 2026 World Cup (Lenovo, Jul 16, 2026). A paper (Aug 20, 2026) describes it as a generative AI assistant built on a domain-specific Football Language Model.

How it compares

The ATP change and the Football Language Model and 48 squads match the sources. The ATP said all its events, where the post says most tournaments. 'Offside, coaching and security analytics', '2,000+ metrics within hours of each whistle' and the $3.8 billion market were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
