the ocean just got its own night watchers. dalhousie researchers trained ai to decode the night behavior of critically endangered north atlantic right whales, published september 16, while csiro's ocean drones set out for the southern ocean with ai observing tools and plu gave its submarine ai a sense of what the sea should look like.

the whale we could not see is now the whale being tracked.

Context

Verified source: PLOS ONE (Sep 16, 2026), by Jay Kirkham and colleagues at Dalhousie, says machine learning models predicted previously unreported feeding close to the surface at night in North Atlantic right whales. Daytime feeding was seen near the seafloor in video audits. EurekAlert and Phys.org carry the same news.

How it compares

The Dalhousie study, published Sep 16, and the finding of night feeding near the surface match the paper. The CSIRO ocean drones and the submarine AI from PLU were not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'The whale we could not see is now the whale being tracked' is the author's opinion.

  • Read the paper for the share of night feeding the older method missed.
