the newsroom just replaced the reporters it laid off. mcclatchy cut dozens of journalists while staffing up an ai content lab, and reuters institute's survey finds 27 percent of journalists now use ai daily while reuters itself wired its mcp server into an ai video editor.
the local story may still need a person, the roundup no longer does.
Context
Verified source: Poynter (Sep 10, 2026) reports McClatchy cut more than 90 staff in its most severe layoffs in years, hitting at least 13 papers including The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee. TheWrap says it came months after the company's push to AI.
Verified source: Reuters (Jul 8, 2026) launched its Model Context Protocol server for News Agency customers, and The Beat (Sep 13) reports a Reuters link-up with an AI video editing platform.
The McClatchy cuts and the Reuters MCP server and video editing integration match the sources. 'Dozens' understates the more than 90 Poynter reports. The AI content lab and the Reuters Institute figure of 27 percent of journalists using AI daily were not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The Reuters Institute report I saw is a Nov 2025 UK survey, run Aug to Nov 2024, which reports 56 percent using AI at least weekly. 'The roundup no longer does' is the author's opinion.
