The newsroom is becoming a hybrid

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the newsroom is becoming a hybrid: the ap uses openai models to scan overnight news, verify images by geolocation and chronolocation, and turn thousands of supreme court filings into searchable records, while the guardian only allows ai for alt text and transcription under senior editor approval. the machines draft the routine.

the editor owns the risk.

Context

OpenAI published a roundup on Jul 22, 2026 of how news organizations use its models, saying the Associated Press uses OpenAI technology for reporting, verification and newsroom workflows while keeping journalists in control of editorial judgment. It also covers POLITICO, Axios and others.

Gigazine says the examples include reviewing government documents released daily.

How it compares

The AP using OpenAI technology with journalists in control matches OpenAI's post. The geolocation and chronolocation image checks, the Supreme Court filings and the Guardian's alt text and transcription limit were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
