The museum is now a conversation
the museum is now a conversation: 57 percent of museums used ai in 2026 per the unesco-icom survey, shanxi made doubao the official guide for a hundred plus heritage sites, and the palace museum’s interactive podcast lets a child’s own voice narrate 30 artifacts. governance trails adoption.
the tour guide is being rewritten by the visitor.
Context
The first UNESCO and ICOM global survey on AI in museums, published Sep 16 and 17, 2026, found 57 percent of museums are using AI in 2026 and 55 percent have no internal AI policy, strategy or guidelines. Its headline says governance and capacity lag behind.
On Sep 29, 2026 Doubao announced it became the official AI guide for Shanxi cultural tourism, covering a hundred or more scenic spots and museums, using video calls to identify a sight and explain it. This is Doubao's first provincial tourism partnership.
The 57 percent, the governance gap and Shanxi's Doubao guide over a hundred plus sites match UNESCO, ICOM and Xinhua. The Palace Museum interactive podcast with a child's own voice narrating 30 artifacts is not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
