the mine just stopped needing a driver to move the mountain. volvo autonomous solutions passed three million tonnes of material hauled without a human behind the wheel on september 24, while komatsu's driverless trucks have crossed ten billion tonnes and just rolled out its thousandth autonomous ultra-class hauler.
the biggest vehicles on earth now run on software.
Context
Verified source: Volvo Autonomous Solutions' release (Sep 24, 2026) says it has hauled more than 3 million tonnes of material autonomously in mining and quarrying. Komatsu's newsroom (Apr 22, 2026) says it commissioned its 1,000th autonomous ultra-class haul truck, and its July 30, 2024 release says its customers had hauled more than 10 billion metric tons.
Volvo's 3 million tonnes on Sep 24, 2026, Komatsu's 1,000th ultra-class truck and the 10 billion tonnes match the sources. The Komatsu truck milestone is dated Apr 22, 2026, and its 10 billion tonnes figure was already stated in July 2024, so neither is new in September. 'The biggest vehicles on earth run on software' is the author's opinion.
