The meadow is now being counted from space

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the meadow is now being counted from space: a deep learning set reads 8,300 underwater images to find eelgrass, satellite models tracked mosquito lagoon seagrass through hurricanes, and a sentinel-2 system maps coastal ecosystems across malaysia.

the bay now files its own vegetation census.

Context

SeagrassFinder is a deep learning method for detecting eelgrass and estimating coverage from underwater images. A Frontiers in Remote Sensing paper from Apr 21, 2026 records seagrass in Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, almost absent before Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in fall 2022 and recovering rapidly in 2023.

An MDPI paper maps seagrass density with Sentinel-2 data and machine learning.

How it compares

The eelgrass deep learning and the Mosquito Lagoon storm study match the sources. The 8,300 image count and the Malaysia Sentinel-2 system were not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The Frontiers paper describes growth after the storms, not tracking through them.

'the bay now files its own vegetation census' is the author's opinion.
