the materials lab just hired ai agents to run its experiments. berkeley lab's genesis mission pairs a team of ai agents with its robotic a-lab to propose, test and refine materials hypotheses, aiming for a 100-fold acceleration of scientific discovery, while ornl's ai already pushes single molecules across copper to build atom-scale patterns.
the next superconductor may be found by a machine that never sleeps.
Context
Verified source: Berkeley Lab (Jul 22, 2026) says DOE announced funding for new projects to accelerate discovery with AI, with Berkeley Lab leading 13 Genesis Mission projects. Berkeley Lab (Feb 3, 2026) describes FORUM-AI, an assistant for energy materials discovery.
Verified source: ORNL (Sep 1, 2026) says AI guides an ultra-sharp microscope tip to push single molecules across copper, automatically building custom atom-scale patterns.
The Genesis Mission projects and ORNL's molecule patterning on copper match the sources. The A-Lab robot pairing with a team of agents and the 100-fold acceleration were not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'Never sleeps' is the author's opinion.

The air is now being asked to keep its own ledger
the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
