The mangrove is now being asked to file its own coastline census

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the mangrove is now being asked to file its own coastline census: a global dataset of 42,703 image mask pairs across 124 countries teaches models to find mangroves anywhere, a resnet unet with elevation constraints extracts and grades degradation in china's largest delta at 0.90 intersection over union, and a convlstm predicts how the forest will shift next.

the blue carbon stand now files its own extent report.

Context

MANGO pairs 42,703 Sentinel-2 images and masks across 124 countries, selecting single-date 2020 imagery to align with annual Global Mangrove Watch labels. It benchmarks segmentation under a country-disjoint train/validation/test split. Global coverage is a dataset property, not guaranteed accuracy in every place.

The March 4, 2026 Nanliu River Delta study combines Landsat time series, tide-aware compositing, ResNet34-U-Net and elevation constraints. Mangrove IoU is 0.822; background IoU is 0.981 and their mean is 0.902. Canopy degradation is assessed separately with EVI and manually checked maps.

The Gaoqiao study combines enhanced U-Net masks from 1993 to 2023 with ConvLSTM forecasts. Its 2019-to-2023 test reports forecasting IoU of 0.787 and MAE of 6.83% for U-Net-ConvLSTM. The 2024-to-2026 projections assume continued current management.

How it compares

The note’s 0.90 is mean IoU across mangrove and background, not mangrove-class IoU. Nanliu is the largest deltaic mangrove system in the northern Beibu Gulf, not China’s largest delta. MANGO’s annual-mask pairing is not independent field truth for every image. Gaoqiao’s regional forecasts do not validate global future mangrove change. Mapped extent, canopy degradation and carbon storage remain different outcomes.

Watch next

  • Field checks on degradation and class-specific omission errors. Prospective forecast validation after storms or changes in management. Transfer beyond Gaoqiao with environmental drivers and tidal conditions.
