The logical qubit is getting cheaper by the year

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the logical qubit is getting cheaper by the year: caltech cut the physical qubits needed for one logical qubit from over twelve, ibm proved error-correction decoding can run in real time, and hefei’s lab verified that more correction keeps converging on the right answer. 2026 is being called the year the field stopped faking it.

the qubit count is becoming less interesting than the error budget.

Context

Nature Communications published in June 2026 a demonstration of real-time, low-latency quantum error correction with superconducting qubits. Caltech and Oratomic's mitten qLDPC codes, reported Aug 3, 2026, reach a 20 percent encoding rate, with 975 physical qubits encoding 195 logical qubits.

An Aug 2026 arXiv paper covers real-time decoding of error correction codes on high-performance computing.

How it compares

Real-time decoding and Caltech cutting the physical qubits per logical qubit match the sources; the mitten codes are the reported Caltech result. IBM proving real-time decoding, a Hefei lab verifying convergence with more correction, 'over twelve' as the prior qubit count, and 2026 being called the year the field stopped faking it were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
