the largest ai infrastructure spender is paying for it with people. oracle kept its fy27 capex forecast at $90-95b, spent $28.5b in q1 alone, three times last year, and cut roughly 21,000 jobs in fy26 while free cash flow went negative.
the buildout is being financed by borrowing and layoffs, not profit.
Context
Verified date: Oracle reported Q1 FY2027 results on Sep 10, 2026. Its release says free cash flow was negative $5 billion for Q1 as it invested in Cloud Infrastructure, and a transcript summary from Longbridge says it expects capex of $90-95 billion. BiGGo's call summary says full-year capex is projected at $90-95 billion.
The release also reports a record Q1 operating cash flow of $23 billion, up 184%.
The $90-95 billion capex and negative free cash flow match Oracle's Sep 10 results, though the sources read do not say the forecast was kept rather than raised. The $28.5 billion Q1 capex, the three-times comparison and the roughly 21,000 job cuts in FY26 were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The release also shows a $20 billion equity issuance per Longbridge, so 'borrowing and layoffs' is the author's opinion and leaves out equity.
