The lake is now being asked to give warning before it bursts
the lake is now being asked to give warning before it bursts: a u net trained on sentinel 1 radar tracks high risk himalayan lakes with an iou of 0.9, a framework called safeflow scores outburst risk from ice velocity and land surface temperature, and uttarakhand is building its first glacial lake early warning system at vasundhara tal.
the mountain now files its own danger list.
Context
An arXiv paper presents an automated deep learning pipeline for monitoring high-risk Himalayan glacial lakes with time-series Sentinel-1 SAR, using a U-Net with an EfficientNet-B3 backbone trained on a cohort of four lakes (Tsho Rolpa, Chamlang Tsho, Tilicho and Gokyo Lake) and reporting an IoU of 0.9130. A second arXiv paper presents GLOFNet, a public multimodal dataset for the Shisper Glacier in the Karakoram that combines Sentinel-2 imagery, NASA ITS_LIVE glacier velocity and MODIS land surface temperature.
The Indian Express reports that a team from CBRI Roorkee and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology left on September 29, 2026, for Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli to install the state's first glacial lake early-warning system, with work scheduled from September 29 to October 15. It adds that the National Disaster Management Authority identified 13 high-risk glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, five in the highest category, and Vasundhara Tal is among them.
The note's IoU of 0.9 matches the SAR paper's 0.9130 as a round figure. That score comes from a four-lake cohort, so it does not show the model generalizing to all Himalayan lakes. 'Tracks' is the note's word for a pipeline the paper describes as a foundation for early warning, not as a deployed system.
The SafeFlow title and journal were found, but the abstract text was not retrievable from the pages read, so 'scores outburst risk from ice velocity and land surface temperature' is unsupported here, not refuted. Ice velocity and land surface temperature are the inputs of the separate GLOFNet dataset, which is a different paper about one glacier.
The Vasundhara Tal installation is confirmed as under way by the Indian Express and the New Indian Express, and the Indian Express says the exact trigger of the Dharali flash flood a year earlier remains unclear. The pages read do not say the Uttarakhand system uses AI, so that link is unsupported here, not refuted.
'The mountain now files its own danger list' is the author's line.
