The grassland is now being asked to file its own cover ledger
the grassland is now being asked to file its own cover ledger: a usgs system runs ai over 40 years of landsat to map shrubs grass litter and bare ground across western rangelands, uav spectral models read grazing intensity from the ground up, and an improved yolo spots patchy baldness on alpine meadows.
the pasture now files its own degradation report.
Context
USGS RCMAP produces annual Landsat-based fractional cover maps at 30 m. The May 1, 2026 data release spans 1985 to 2025 and includes herbaceous cover, shrubs, litter, bare ground and trees, plus shrub height and temporal trends. These are mixed-pixel component estimates, not individual-plant inventories.
The February 3, 2026 UAV hyperspectral study examines biomass and nine functional traits under grazing pressures in the Inner Mongolian Steppe. Its institutional abstract reports normalized RMSE below 0.2 for trait and biomass retrieval, then analyzes ecosystem responses to grazing.
ST-YOLOv11, published March 19, 2026, detects pika holes and bare patches in alpine-meadow UAV imagery. Its PB-dataset experiments report improvements over the baseline in precision, recall and mAP at a 0.5 overlap threshold, using attention, feature modulation and a high-resolution detection branch.
RCMAP’s long record supports cover-change analysis but does not automatically identify its cause. The UAV study retrieves traits and biomass under known grazing treatments; it does not establish a universal detector of grazing intensity. Pika holes, bare patches and livestock impacts are not interchangeable, and YOLO benchmark gains do not prove operational restoration decisions. Thirty-metre cover fractions and UAV object detections operate at different scales.
