the frontier race is a billboard, the volume tier is the product. gemini 3.8 flash landed on sept 2 as google's third flash release in six weeks, a fourth followed within four months, all at $0.75 per million input tokens.
the models most people actually use now move faster than the ones the headlines cover.
Context
Verified source: Google's Sep 2, 2026 announcement says Gemini 3.8 Flash follows 3.7 Flash from three weeks earlier and is the third Flash release in six weeks, at the same speed and cost as 3.7.
Google's developer docs list 3.8 Flash at an introductory $0.75 per 1M input tokens and $3.75 per 1M output tokens through the end of the year. Apidog reports the rate doubles to $1.50 and $7.50 on Jan 1, 2027.
The Sep 2 date, the third Flash release in six weeks and the $0.75 input price match Google's own post and docs. That a fourth release followed within four months was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the sources read, which are dated Sep 2 to Oct 9. The price is introductory, and per Apidog it doubles on Jan 1, 2027, so 'all at $0.75' holds only through 2026. 'The volume tier is the product' is the author's opinion.
