The forecast is now the shelf

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the forecast is now the shelf: ai demand forecasting pushes grocery accuracy to 85 to 95 percent against a human baseline of 60 to 70, cutting perishable waste from 8 to 12 percent of category sales down to 3 to 5, and kroger is rolling dynamic pricing chainwide to clear what still expires.

the supermarket is now a prediction machine with a floor.

Context

CNBC reported on Apr 17, 2026 that some grocers use AI to set pricing and mark down perishables to cut waste and turn shrink into revenue. Forbes reported in 2023 on Afresh, an AI startup helping grocers cut food waste. A Kroger-linked 84.51 document describes machine learning for prices and promotions.

MMCG Invest says electronic shelf labels are used to mark down perishables, not to raise prices on demand.

How it compares

AI forecasting and markdowns to cut perishable waste match the sources. The 85 to 95 percent accuracy against 60 to 70, the waste drop from 8 to 12 percent to 3 to 5, and Kroger rolling dynamic pricing chainwide were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
