The forecast is now the farmhand
the forecast is now the farmhand: an openai foundation grant of 10 million dollars is taking ai weather services to millions of farmers across south and southeast asia and east africa, and india’s bharat-vistaar platform already reaches about 15 million farmers across six states with satellite-driven advisories. the first ai customers were never the coders.
they were the people who can’t afford a bad forecast.
Context
The University of Notre Dame's Keough School reported on Sep 10, 2026 that AIM for Scale received a 10 million dollar grant from the OpenAI Foundation to help governments bring AI-powered weather services to millions of farmers in South and Southeast Asia and East Africa.
The OpenAI Foundation's own post describes a broader 60 million dollar investment to bring AI weather forecasts to 100 million smallholder farmers over three years. India's agriculture minister launched Bharat-VISTAAR for farmers in Feb 2026.
The 10 million dollar grant and the three regions match the sources. The 10 million is part of a larger 60 million program in the Foundation's post. Bharat-VISTAAR reaching about 15 million farmers across six states was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
