The fireball is now being asked to file its own arrival notice

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the fireball is now being asked to file its own arrival notice: a daily multi stage pipeline finds meteors in weather satellite lightning data and publishes them on nasa's bolide site, a resnet 34 trained with transfer learning classifies meteors at 98 percent precision, and a chinese citizen science project pairs ai with camera digital twins to catch them anywhere.

the streak now files its own light curve.

Context

The November 11, 2024 ADASS presentation describes a GOES lightning-data bolide pipeline with hierarchical clustering, random forests, then convolutional neural networks. Detections are promptly published on a NASA-hosted site. NASA’s 2023 project account describes the goal of a fully automated system, while the later presentation documents a working multi-stage pipeline.

Deep machine learning for meteor monitoring (2023) uses transfer learning with ResNet-34 and Grad-CAM on Spanish Meteor Network images. Its balanced 300-image test set contains 150 meteor and 150 non-meteor images. The paper reports 96% test accuracy and 98% precision for the meteor class.

The HuoLiuXing paper describes camera digital twins, calibration and uncertainty-aware multi-camera trajectory estimates. Its authors report more than 1,400 valid meteor reports from cameras across China since deployment in 2022. This is a paper-reported count, not independently audited.

How it compares

The 98% figure is precision on the meteor class, not recall, universal detection accuracy, or a satellite-pipeline result. GOES bolide light curves and ground-camera meteor tracks are different measurements. Camera calibration and multiple views support trajectory estimates; the HuoLiuXing abstract does not establish coverage anywhere in the world.
