the excavator just dug its first full shift with nobody in the cab. bedrock robotics put autonomous hydraulic excavators on paying jobs in august, moving over 65,000 cubic yards of earth at a 130-acre site in the southwest and working around the clock at projects for sundt, champion and zachry.
the construction site just became software with a steel chassis.
Context
Verified source: Bedrock Robotics' Aug 13, 2026 post and its Aug 17 release say its excavators are operating fully autonomously on live customer job sites for the first time. Engineering News-Record (Dec 12, 2025) reported the earlier work with Sundt Construction on a 130-acre manufacturing facility in the Southwest.
The first fully autonomous operation on commercial sites in August 2026 and the Sundt, 130-acre Southwest project match Bedrock and ENR. The 65,000 cubic yards figure, the Champion and Zachry sites and 'around the clock' were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the excerpts read. The ENR project was reported as of Dec 2025, so the 130-acre site predates the autonomy announcement. 'A steel chassis with software' is the author's opinion.
