the entry-level developer market is collapsing exactly as fast as the ai-agent market inflates. junior backend and frontend postings fell 52% year over year while new ai-agent roles grew 789% in the first seven months of 2026, at an average salary of 63,160 yuan a month.
the profession keeps hiring, it just stopped hiring at the bottom.
Context
Verified source: a Maimai (Sep 16, 2026, via Tencent News) talent report says new AI job postings on its platform grew 789.47% year over year in January to July 2026, with average monthly pay for new AI roles at 63,160 yuan, up 2.74% from 61,474 yuan a year earlier.
The 52% fall in ordinary backend and frontend demand appears in a Nowcoder post that attributes it to Zhaopin for Q1 2026.
The 789% and the 63,160 yuan match the Maimai report, which covers new AI postings on one platform, not the whole market. The 52% figure is a Q1 2026 number from Zhaopin as relayed by Nowcoder, a secondary source, and it was reported for ordinary backend and frontend roles, not specifically junior ones. The two figures come from different platforms and periods, so 'exactly as fast' is the author's comparison. Indeed's Hiring Lab, covering US postings, found software development postings up almost 15% since Feb 2025.
