The data center is going to orbit
the data center is going to orbit: spacex’s next rideshare flight carries a planet labs satellite with a google tpu on board, china’s chaozhisuan-1 processes other satellites’ images in orbit and can update its ai after launch, and a $1b consortium is building altair, the largest ai satellite constellation yet.
the cloud is about to move above your head.
Context
CNBC (Oct 1, 2026) reports SpaceX planned to launch Google tensor processing units to orbit on Planet Labs satellites; GCN (Oct 4) says four TPUs went up on Oct 1 aboard a Project Suncatcher prototype on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission.
TechTimes (Sep 23, 2026) says China's Chaozhisuan-1 satellite, launched three days earlier, had begun processing Earth-observation data directly in orbit. A Sep 9, 2026 release says Marlan Space and Loft Orbital, with Mistral and others, plan what they call the world's largest AI satellite infrastructure with a $1 billion investment.
The Planet Labs satellite with a Google TPU, the Chaozhisuan-1 in-orbit processing and the $1 billion consortium match the sources. The name 'altair' and the claim that Chaozhisuan-1 can update its AI after launch were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
