The copyright line is being drawn on training data
the copyright line is being drawn on training data: the us copyright office ruled ai vocals without human input are not copyrightable in may, munich’s court held memorisation is reproduction in the gema case, and jamendo is suing nvidia over fugatto’s dataset. suno responded by licensing warner and bmg.
the model’s memory is becoming the legal question.
Context
Jamendo, a Luxembourg-based music company, sued Nvidia in California federal court (filed Jun 22, 2026, per the complaint and Reuters) over allegedly using its music and data to train audio AI systems. Jamendo also filed a copyright complaint against Suno in a Massachusetts federal court.
The US Copyright Office's Part 2 report addresses the copyrightability of AI outputs. A WIPO case summary covers GEMA v OpenAI at the Munich I Regional Court.
The Jamendo v Nvidia suit and the existence of the GEMA v OpenAI Munich case match their sources. The May ruling on AI vocals, the memorisation-as-reproduction holding, the Fugatto dataset link and Suno's Warner and BMG licensing are not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The Copyright Office report read is a general analysis of human contribution, not a ruling on vocals.
