the context window race was never about the window, it's about amnesia. hugging face shipped funes on sept 3, a local-first memory layer for coding agents that keeps session history on your machine, and hindsight gained 17k stars this week doing the same job.
the industry spent a year on bigger contexts, then had to build a separate thing called remembering.
Context
Verified source: Hugging Face's blog 'Give Your Coding Agents a Memory You Own' (Sep 3, 2026, by David Corvoysier) introduces funes, a durable memory layer built from agent sessions already on your machine, for Claude Code, Codex, pi and Hermes, working locally.
The funes repo (huggingface/funes) is Rust, Apache-2.0, created Jun 18, 2026.
The Sep 3 launch and the local-first design match Hugging Face's post. Hindsight (vectorize-io, created Oct 30, 2025) shows star counts of 18,849, 20,832 and 22,089 in snapshots taken at different times, which do not show a 17k gain this week. 'Gained 17k stars this week' was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the sources read, and the snapshots would make 17k the total at some point, not a weekly gain. 'The context window race was about amnesia' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
