The concrete is now being mixed by model
the concrete is now being mixed by model: cement makes up about 8 percent of global emissions, meta’s open-source mix optimizer hits 0.94 accuracy on strength forecasts, and reinforcement learning swaps 40 to 60 percent of the clinker for clay and limestone to cut embodied carbon by a third.
the foundation now carries less weight.
Context
Meta's open-source BOxCrete uses Bayesian optimization for concrete mix design. Its GitHub page says concrete accounts for 6 to 8 percent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Engineering at Meta describes an AI tool for stronger, lower-carbon, faster-curing mixes in Jul 2025 and an American-produced cement push in Mar 2026.
An arXiv paper describes the BOxCrete model.
The open-source Meta mix optimizer matches the sources. They say 6 to 8 percent of emissions, not about 8. The 0.94 strength accuracy and the 40 to 60 percent clinker swap using reinforcement learning were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. Meta's tool uses Bayesian optimization, not reinforcement learning, in the sources read.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
