The checkout died quietly

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the checkout died quietly: amazon closed its own go stores, but carrefour and sam’s club keep theirs running on cheaper edge ai, and sensetime’s humanoid clerk store in shanghai fulfills orders in 15 seconds. the lesson is that cashierless tech scaled only when the cameras got cheap.

the checkout was never the product, the store’s data was.

Context

Verified event dates: AP reported on Jan 27, 2026 that Amazon will close most Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, and CNBC reports some will convert to Whole Foods. Labor Daily reported on May 21, 2026 that SenseTime's SenseMartGo robot shops in Shanghai fill an order in as little as 15 seconds, with a robot behind the counter and no clerk.

The Shanghai shops are SenseTime unit Shangtang Shanhui's embodied-intelligence convenience stores, open in three locations at the time of the report.

How it compares

Amazon's closure and the 15-second robot store in Shanghai match their sources. That Carrefour and Sam's Club keep their stores running on cheaper edge AI, and the 'cameras got cheap' reasoning, are not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'The checkout was never the product, the store's data was' is the author's.
