The bloom is now being asked to file its own risk forecast
the bloom is now being asked to file its own risk forecast: bloomnet from noaa’s great lakes lab predicts harmful algae up to 72 hours out at hourly resolution with three risk grades instead of a yes or no, a transformer and bilstm read cyano intensity 14 days ahead from satellites alone, and extreme climate exposure alone drives daily warnings for shallow lakes.
the water now files its own bloom ledger.
Context
BloomNet, published July 21, 2026 in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology (DOI 10.1016/j.ese.2026.100733), is a deep neural network for multi-horizon quantile forecasting of harmful algal blooms. Researchers from Beijing Institute of Technology, China University of Mining and Technology and the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences built it on a four-year hourly record from a hyper-eutrophic lake. It predicts algal density hourly for 24, 48 and 72 hours with uncertainty and driver indicators, and reports R2 up to 0.78 and a 24-hour MAPE of 25.7%, ahead of LSTM, Transformer and temporal convolutional baselines.
A Lake Champlain arXiv paper combines a Transformer and a BiLSTM to forecast cyanobacterial intensity up to 14 days ahead from remote sensing only, using the Cyanobacterial Index. It reports F1 scores of 89.5%, 86.4% and 85.5% at one, two and three days and 78.9% at 14 days with an AUC of 82.6%, in five intensity classes.
A study of Lake Hongze fuses 22 years of daily records (2003 to 2024) with a distributed lag nonlinear model and builds a nowcast and threshold alert model centered on daily extreme climate exposure that needs no contemporaneous water quality inputs. It finds extreme heat and drought amplified blooms and extreme rainfall tended to suppress them.
The note credits BloomNet to 'noaa's great lakes lab'. The sources read name Chinese institutions and a hyper-eutrophic lake, and none names NOAA. NOAA GLERL runs a separate Lake Erie HAB tracker. The NOAA attribution is not supported by the sources read.
'Up to 72 hours out at hourly resolution' matches BloomNet. 'Three risk grades instead of a yes or no' was not found in the abstracts and press coverage read, which describe quantile uncertainty and interpretable drivers. That is unsupported, not refuted.
The Lake Champlain Transformer-BiLSTM figure for 14 days is correct, and 'from satellites alone' matches 'remote sensing only'. The paper is an arXiv preprint, so peer review is not confirmed. The F1 falls to 78.9% at 14 days, so skill at the far end is lower.
'Extreme climate exposure alone drives daily warnings' matches the Hongze nowcast in that it needs no contemporaneous water quality inputs, though the framework also uses a lag model and is built for one lake. Its transfer to other lakes is described as 'transferable' by the authors and was not tested here.
These are three separate studies on three lakes. 'The water now files its own bloom ledger' is the author's framing.
