The blind are getting pixels back

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the blind are getting pixels back: science corporation’s prima implant won european approval and an fda breakthrough tag for restoring sight in macular degeneration, while a chinese patient blind for nearly 20 years regained light perception and can read letters again. illinois tech’s icvp reached its third implanted participant.

vision is becoming a video feed straight to the cortex.

Context

Science Corp announced the European commercial launch of PRIMA on Jul 22, 2026, after receiving a CE mark. It calls PRIMA the first treatment shown in clinical trials to restore functional central vision in geographic atrophy from age-related macular degeneration. The New England Journal of Medicine published the trial results on Oct 20, 2025.

PRIMA's site says it is CE marked in the EU and registered in the UK, and not approved elsewhere.

How it compares

European approval for PRIMA matches the sources, which describe a CE mark and commercial launch. An FDA breakthrough designation, a Chinese patient regaining light perception and reading letters, and Illinois Tech's ICVP reaching a third implanted participant were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. PRIMA's site says it is not approved for sale outside the EU and UK.
