The bear is now being asked to file its own arrival notice
the bear is now being asked to file its own arrival notice: a radar system called bear dar runs ai in eureka nunavut and detected a mother with two cubs before people met them, it tells bears from wolves moose and people at ranges up to a mile, and an aerial system cuts arctic survey processing time by 80 percent.
the ice now files its own visitor log.
Context
Polar Bears International (June 11, 2026) says Bear-dar, its AI radar system, prevented a surprise encounter between people and polar bears for the first time. At the Environment and Climate Change Canada weather station in Eureka, Nunavut, it detected a mother and two cubs, and staff moved the bears away with vehicles. Earlier it had mostly detected Arctic wolves.
Mongabay (July 15, 2026) describes radar panels about the size of an iPad that look from a few hundred meters out to 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles), paired with cameras for confirmation. It says the AI in the radars was trained to detect polar bears using zoo animals in Winnipeg, and it was developed with Spotter Global.
KAMERA (arXiv, September 2025, Kitware with NOAA) is a multi-camera, multi-spectral system for real-time detection of seals and polar bears in aerial surveys over the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The abstract says it gives up to an 80% reduction in dataset processing time over previous methods.
The note joins two separate systems. Bear-dar and KAMERA come from different teams, and the 80% processing time figure belongs to KAMERA's aerial seal surveys, stated as 'up to'. The note's claim that Bear-dar 'tells bears from wolves, moose and people at ranges up to a mile' is only partly supported: the sources say it detects movement out to about 0.75 miles and has seen wolves and a bear family, but the pages read do not state how well it tells bears from moose or people. The Eureka detection is one reported event, a single site, from the group that built the system. Per the sources it alerted staff who then confirmed on camera, so a human check is part of the loop.
