the bank half-year report now carries an ai token count. chinese banks won 406 llm projects in h1, up 110%, and publish daily token usage — cmb’s throughput up 78% yoy, ping an at 5.3b tokens — while icbc’s agent platform already runs 600+ scenarios.
the kpi for ai just moved from pilots to earnings.
Context
Verified date: Economic Reference Daily, via Xinhua on Sep 3, 2026, reports that China Merchants Bank's daily token throughput rose more than 78% year on year in H1 2026, and that Ping An Bank's token consumption exceeded 5.3 billion, up about 130%. It says ICBC and CCB each have more than 600 AI scenarios in use.
TMTPost (Aug 31) and China Banking and Insurance News (Sep 10) also describe token consumption as a metric in the half-year reports.
The 78% for CMB, the 5.3 billion tokens for Ping An and ICBC's 600-plus scenarios match the sources, which give them as daily or H1 figures from the half-year reports. The 406 LLM projects won by banks, the 110% increase and the claim that banks publish daily token usage as a group were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'The KPI for AI just moved from pilots to earnings' is the author's opinion.
