The ai industry’s own footprint is becoming a climate story
the ai industry’s own footprint is becoming a climate story: data centers are set to jump from 415 to 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, and microsoft, amazon and google’s combined emissions hit 119 million tons, roughly a third of france’s. grok 4’s training alone emitted as much as 17,000 cars in a year.
the tool that fights climate change is also charging it a fee.
Context
The Guardian reported on Jul 11, 2026 that Microsoft, Amazon and Google's collective carbon emissions rose nearly a fifth in a year, driven largely by data centre construction; Inside Telecom (Jul 14) puts the combined total at 119 million tonnes, about a third of France's emissions.
The IEA's Energy and AI report (Apr 10, 2025) is the main public projection of data centre electricity demand. Epoch AI estimates Grok 4's training at 140,000 tons of CO2, while another analysis (Apr 15, 2026) says 72,000 tons.
The big three's 119 million tons and the one-third of France comparison match the coverage. The 415 to 945 terawatt-hours range was not in the excerpts read, and the Grok 4 figures differ by source: 140,000 tons per Epoch, 72,000 tons per another analysis, so '17,000 cars' is not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted.
