the ai boom is 225,000 layoffs deep. since january, 519 events have displaced 225,122 tech workers — already more than all of 2025 — and junior developers are taking the hits first.
the hiring is happening inside ai teams, not around them.
Context
Verified source: SkillSyncer's 2026 layoffs tracker counts 519 layoff events and 225,122 people impacted year to date, against 338 events and 205,773 people in all of 2025. TechTimes dates the count to Sep 25, 2026 and says it already passes all of 2025. Rent a Recruiter (Sep 29) says a growing share of 2026 cuts are explicitly tied to AI.
These are one tracker's counts of announced cuts, not a government statistic.
The 519 events, 225,122 workers and the comparison with 2025 match SkillSyncer. The post says 'since January' and 'tech workers', which fits the tracker's scope. That junior developers are taking the hits first and that hiring is happening inside AI teams were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. The tracker is not the only count; Layoffs.fyi keeps a separate database. 'The AI boom is 225,000 layoffs deep' joins layoffs to AI as cause, which is the author's opinion; the tracker itself only says a growing share cite AI.
